Las Posadas commemorates the journey that Joseph and Mary made from Nazareth to Bethlehemin search of a safe refuge where Mary could give birth to the baby Jesus. When they were unable to find lodging in Bethlehem, Joseph and Mary were forced to seek shelter in a stable, where the Christ child was born. Mass of the rooster (Misa de gallo) It is called this because a rooster is supposed to have crowed the night that Jesus was born. Most families eat their main Christmas meal on Christmas Eve before the service.A piñata is typically a colorful papier-mâché animal (or some other shape), with a hollow cavity filled with candy or small toys and treats. The piñata is originally from China, but is now a large part of Mexican tradition and culture. It is also very popular in the United States on Cinco de Mayo and at children's birthday parties.
